Hey kids, welcome to “what the thunder said.” It’s an email of specially curated bullshit from my brain by my brain. Maybe it’s relevant, maybe it’s not. It’s kind of a dumpster fire, but hey, dumpster fires are all the rage in 2020.
I don’t really have any goals for this newsletter. That’s probably the kiss of death, as anyone who followed my last public writing attempt would know (hi mom, sorry I said “bullshit” in the second sentence!). I’m bad at blogs, and also most things, but here we are. I’m back on my bullshit. I’m unemployed and I have nothing but time to burn, baby!
What will I talk about? Oh boi, literally anything. I read a lot of random crap, from articles about food and food media to obscure gothic novels to books on the scientific tree of life. I have a wide variety of interests, and I don’t like being pinned down to any specific topic for too long. This is why I’m usually in the middle of five books at a time, why I get lost in Wikipedia holes at two in the morning, and why my husband once called me a dilettante and I wasn’t offended at all. Expect some link dumps, maybe book recommendations, and some rants. But also keep those expectations low, for my sake and yours.
Join me as I try to start a project and stick with it.
what I’m reading right now: I finally got the spouse (pronounced spooz) to read Anna Karenina, so now I’m reading Anna Karenina again. Before that I was in the middle of Kazuo Ishigiro’s The Buried Giant and probably three different cookbooks that I read when I’m BiG sTrEsSeD.
what I’m cooking right now: I found Sun ramen noodles, so I’ve eaten TOO MUCH RAMEN over the past week. My love for noods is deep. Also, I really love this eggplant recipe excerpted from Maangchi’s latest book by Bon Appétit (lol complex feelings about which I’ll talk about later). It takes a little bit of time, because eggplant is a lady and demands to be treated just right. Flip side, it’s mostly down time for letting salt draw out liquid from the produce and for the marinade to take its place. Absolutely worth it. I’ve made it twice in two weeks. Unusually, for this recipe, I don’t really make any insane modifications. ‘Rona has changed me.
what I’m doing on a screen right now: I just finished watching BNA from Studio Trigger on Netflix. Plot twist, I’m a weeb. It has a much faster pace than either Kill la Kill or Little Witch Academia; I have mixed feelings about it, but it was still worth watching. It’s visually stunning and totally worth a quick binge. I also started my second play through of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on my Switch because that game is my happy place. We all need a happy place right now.
An article you should read: I’ve really been into email newsletters recently (duh). What prompted me to finish setting this up was this article from Taste. Click through to read about the latest trend in food media, and why it’s here to stay. Full disclosure, I’m a paid subscriber to both Stained Page News and Alicia Kennedy’s newsletter. They both have a free tier, and if you like how they sound in the article, definitely click through and read their content. It’s worth reading.
See you soon!
